Q. Can 2D dwg information in CIM be used in modeling?

A. Using the DWG / DXF Import feature, the DWG file can be used in various modeling spaces such as Base Mode, User Section Mode and Draw Rebar Mode.

DWG / DXF Import

  • The DWG / DXF Import feature can be used in various modeling spaces.

  • In Base Mode (including Library Base Tab), it is possible to model various shapes such as Edge, Face, Solid, etc. using DWG/DXF Import feature, but the generated Solid is not linked to analysis as a Body Type. (Figure 1)

  • The DWG/DXF import feature can be used to create sections in User Section Mode. (Figure 2)

  • In Draw Rebar Mode, rebar properties can be assigned by importing reinforcement drawings created in CAD. (Figures 3 & 4)

Base Mode : File > Import > DWG/DXF

Figure. 1 Import DWG/DXF

  • Defines the working plane of the Global Coordinate System (GCS) for objects imported from DWG, DXF files.

  • Red (X-axis direction), Green (Y-axis direction), Blue (Z-axis direction)

  • However, models using objects that are imported from DWG, DXF files in Base mode are created as Solid elements of the Body Type and not Member elements.

  • The objects are created as Solid elements because the section properties of the shape cannot be defined.

What is User Section?(Figure 2)

  • User Section: The User Section is used to create objects by defining section information as one separate piece of information.

  • After defining the first Properties within the User Section, import the DWG/DXF file to define the section geometry to model.

  • Similar to the SPC feature in midas Civil, cross-sectional properties can be defined, and the defined shape and cross-sectional properties can be interpreted and linked with midas Civil.

User Section Mode Mode : File > Import > DWG/DXF

Figure. 2 Import DWG/DXF in User Section Mode

  • Defines objects imported from DWG, DXF files in the X-Y plane of the Global Coordinate System (GCS).

  • Red (X-axis direction), Green (Y-axis direction)

What is Draw Rebar Mode?(Figure 3 & 4)

  • Draw Rebar Mode : Enter the Rebar Draw mode to construct a rebar in a plane.

  • The user can import DWG/DXF files to import the lines to use as references when creating rebars.

Draw Rebar Mode : File > Import > DWG/DXF

Figure. 3 Enter Draw Rebar Mode

  • In Draw Rebar Mode, the user can manually select edges or vertices to place the rebars.

Figure. 4 Reinforcement using DWG/DXF Import in Rebar Mode.

  • Using the DWG / DXF Import feature, the rebar layer in CAD can be reinforced.
